First Fridays… Celebrate Summer on September 3 from 5:00 - 9:00p.m.

Kick Off Your Weekend with Football Fever downtown!

Downtown South Bend's Football Fridays' Block Parties!

5:00 - 9:00 p.m. Head to downtown South Bend to celebrate First Fridays and the start of football season with King Pao: Michiana’s new rockin’ party band. The 2010 Football Fridays Block Party series is hosted by Downtown South Bend, Inc. (DTSB) and will take place on the campus of the College Football Hall of Fame, corner of Jefferson and St. Joseph Streets. Football Fridays are celebrated rain-or-shine and will, for the first time, feature a Smoker/Gaming tent hosted by the Knights of Columbus benefiting local charities. In addition to the games of chance for adults there will be a Wii gaming tent, corn hole and other games for the entire family. Tailgate food and beverages are available from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. and the live music starts at 6:00 p.m. It’s fun for all ages!

Admission into the Block Party is $3.00 and free for children 12 years of age and younger. New this year is the Knights of Columbus Gaming/Smoker Tent with proceeds from all games benefiting local charities. On site festive tailgate food and beverage catering will be provided by Upper Deck Catering. Returning for a third season are the Corporate Gridiron Flag Football League games. Catch flag football league games on the Gridiron during each Block Party. A team listing and additional game dates can be found on-line at www.dtsbfootballparty.com.

Artpost (216 W. Madison St.)

5:00-9:00 p.m. Opening reception for Stacey Holloway's, 'Somewhere in Between' and Laura Shindollar, 'I Love the Romance of Crime.'

Stacy's new work, 'Somewhere in Between' uses mixed-media installation pieces to communicate an emotion of discomfort within her everyday adult life. This emotion suggests isolation amid two worlds: the real and the surreal.

Laura Shindollar's series, 'I Love the Romance of Crime', is about her fascination with old prisons and criminals. She uses a low-resolution plastic camera to photograph well-known prisons which are now being used as tourist destinations or movie sets. The empty places she photographs have sobering and tragic histories, but often resemble romantic castles or fortresses.

Anne Jankowski graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, studying under Harold Zisla, Tony Droege and Tuck Langland. She attended graduate school in Art History at Indiana University in Bloomington.

For several years in the 80s, she taught painting and drawing at the South Bend Art Center (now the
South Bend Museum of Art). While she exhibited her work in the late 80s, (most notably a one person show at the Art Center called “Echoes of Poland” and a two person show in North Carolina), she was unable to continue her art on a full time basis.

Two years ago, she happily returned to her work. She paints predominantly in oils, and enjoys simplified landscapes which exploit the beauty and texture of the oil on canvas. She has also ventured into abstract acrylics and carving on wood. This work on wood is more light-hearted and vibrant. She has used these techniques in practical applications, such as furniture, lending to the appeal as “usable art.” More of her work can be viewed at jankowskiart.com.jankowskiart.com
